The Abyssal Zone
The abyss of the oceans is characterized by intense cold, 0.6 C to 3.5 C (water freezes at O C), no light, and lots of pressure. Because of these hostile environments very few animals live here, and most are invertebrate organisms. No plants can grow here due to lack of sunlight, which plants require to perform photosynthesis.
Angler fish
- Melanocetus johnsoni
- Due to scarcity of food at such deep depths, the Angler-fish is one of the few predators to cleverly trick prey into following the dangling light attached to it's body right into it's jaws.
