Benthic Zone
The Benthic zone is the ecological area at the bottom of any given body of water such as lakes or oceans. Benthos are the organisms which live in the Benthic zone, and are different from those elsewhere in the Ocean. Many are adapted to live on the substrate or the bottom sediment that exist at the bottom of oceans. Many organisms here are scavengers, or detrivores that have adapted to feeding off of dead organisms that have decayed and fallen to the Benthic zone. This type of food is what supplies the Benthic food chain. Becuase of the pressure and the lack of human interference this zone has not changed very much over the years. Many of the organisms that live in this zone are also chemosynthetic because of the abundant minerals and nutrients in the water from the hydrothermal vents.
Gulper eel
Saccopharyngiformes
Due to the gulper eel's specialized body shape, it is a poor swimmer and relies on the luminescent organ at the tip of its tail to attract prey. It's giant mouth is used for scavenging and allows it to swallow large fish that die and float to the bottom of the ocean where it lives.
